Village Market Food Centers - Save Your Reciepts Program
Dear Parents and Students in the classes of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013:
Welcome back to Colon Jr./Sr. High School. You have made an excellent choice in attending Colon Jr./Sr. High School to earn your diploma as a strong and proud Magi. I hope you had a great break and are as eager for school to begin as I am. With your help, we will have an exceptional school year. I am very excited and impressed to have met a few of you. Thank you for coming in to introduce yourself and offering your assistance during your summer break. I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the student body and their families. Please plan on having a great year.We would like to welcome three new staff members this year. Mr. Jason Burgess has taken the Math position for Mrs. McConaghy, Miss Rebecca Soltis has taken Mrs. Strobe’s Spanish position, and Mr. Matt Cook has taken the position of the K-12 Guidance Counselor. Mr. Darrin VandenBerg is our new Athletic Director and will be teaching half-time in the Science department. We wish the best of luck to those who have moved on.
Seniors - Class of 2009, you are now the leaders of the school. I have always counted on my Seniors to lead the way for the underclassmen; I trust that you will not let me down. I have been told you will be exceptional leaders of the building. Staff members have spoken very highly of you as mature young adults. As you enter this final phase of your high school years, make sure you are challenging yourself to excel, leading from your hearts, and leaving a legacy of positive Magi Spirit for those to remember for years to come.
Juniors - You have some pretty big shoes to fill. Your class must take the ACT/MME test this year. Many students of the class of 2009 passed and will be reaping the benefit of $4,000 for MME success. Be sure to soak in all the educational opportunities you can; remember to apply yourself daily, review and learn! You need to be prepared when the testing date arrives on March 10th. Financial incentives are still being offered to those who pass all the tests with a 1 or 2 score. Make sure you are taking each learning experience as an opportunity to grow and be a more productive student. You have only once in a lifetime to experience high school and all it has to offer. Take this opportunity to learn as much as you can and build a strong educational foundation for your future. I hope that you will participate in all we have to offer during your final two years, this way you will have created memories you will never forget. Applying yourself wholeheartedly now, will pave the way to success on your road to college life after high school. You have built a firm foundation for educational success.
Sophomores - I would like you to continue to think about your career choices. During the second half of this year, you will have to make choices whether to enter Branch Area Technology Center, to remain at the high school all day, or to apply to attend the Dual Enrollment Program. You must take the ACT PLAN TEST to participate in dual enrollment during the 2009 academic year. You must plan ahead to achieve success after high school.
Freshmen – This will be your first year as a high school student. Every class you take and pass will earn you credit towards your graduation in four years. You begin each class with an A, what you do with the material from September 2nd on determines if you maintain that 4.0 (grade point average, which is very important for scholarship and entrance into college). Make sure you only have to take each class only once. Our staff is very helpful; we want to see you succeed. If you need assistance in any area, please let one of us know. We can not help if we do not know, so please speak up. Let us know what we can do to assist you. Your attendance is imperative to your success in high school. If you are absent unfortunately you miss out on class participation and discussions which clarify information and material you are learning. Being in class will help you keep that A (4.0) you are starting with on September 2nd, so be here to learn!
8th Grade Class - This is your last year as a grade school student. You are the leaders of the junior high so the expectation is that you will lead well. You already know that when you come to school you must come here to learn. Make this one of your best years. Do your best in all of your classes and put that inquiring mind on when you enter school each morning so you will be able to learn something new each day.
I would like to see as many of you involved with the co-curricular activities as possible. Not only do these activities help build character, they help you learn to work as an effective team member with specific goals to reach and become a graceful winner. I highly recommend that you participate in some of these events during your jr./sr. high school years. You will have a lot of fun and might even make a few new friends. Our co-curricular activities offer our students the opportunity to excel in areas outside of the classroom. We offer National Honor Society, Student Council, Environmental Club, Varsity Club, Jr. and Sr. Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, Jr./Sr. Spanish Club, Yearbook, S.A.D.D., Plays, Football, Sideline and Competitive Cheer, Basketball, Volleyball, Wrestling, Track, Cross Country, Baseball, and Softball. These activities keep students invested in school. Our colors of Red and White shine brightly because we work together with the community to provide well rounded educational opportunities. It is our commitment to work as a team with our community, our parents, and most of all, our students who make us a success.
We will see you September 2nd for a full day of school to begin another great year at Colon Jr./Sr. High School.
Home of the MAGI!
Thank you again for all you do.
Respectfully,
Debra Swartz
